The CEO John McDonough oversaw for Newell Company during 1998 oversaw two acquisitions. First was the acquisition of Calphalon and second was the acquisition of Rubbermaid. Calphalon was a privately held manufacturer of anodized aluminum cookware whereas Rubbermaid was a manufacturer of plastic consumer and commercial products. It was decided that the new company would be named as Newell Rubbermaid and would have a greater global presence and a broader product offering. These acquisitions were viewed as part of the next Newell’s strategy and McDonough identified a need to develop and buy stronger brands because of increasing market power of Newell’s primary customers. Their customers were big store like Wal-Mart, K Mart etc. Wal Mart alone accounted 15% of the sales for Newell. They key strategic perspective of Newell was to focus on the profitability perspective not on sales perspectives. Newell followed an aggressive marketing strategy by acquiring 30 businesses in the next 20 years, to act upon it they focused on those businesses which were relatively weak, have obsolete technology, lessened production and below average production, efficiency and effectiveness. McDonough thought that the company had to grow and also said that the research showed that companies with over $10 billion in market capitalization commanded higher price/earnings multiples and that it was important for Newell to reach this level of optimization. 1. Does the Newell have a successful corporate-level strategy? Does the company add value to the businesses within its portfolio? If so, how? Yes, Newell have a successful corporate level strategy and it does add value to the business within its portfolio. Newell company corporate strategy was primarily based on the rationale that the company has to continue to grow to the extent that it could cross the threshold of over $10 billion in market capitalization so that it could command higher price/earnings multiples in the market. To achieve this goal Newell Company follows the strategy to make a high-volume/ low cost product and target towards large retail institutions, the larger mass retailers. â€Å"Newell is a manufacturer and full-service marketer of consumer products serving the needs of volume retailers†. (Mission statement) Besides just sticking to the parent company, Newell management adopted some aggressive strategy and started acquiring related business to its business portfolio. By doing so, the executives thought to leverage and capitalize the relationships of the target companies in the market in order to sell other items as well. The broader corporate strategy besides these acquisitions was to add value to its already powerful multiproduct offering and make Newell a more important supplier for the world largest retailers. The company acquired companies to round out its existing product lines and consolidate industry capacity to achieve efficiency rather than pricing power. The acquisitions also provide Newell with an asset of shelf space at different retailers. The two pronged strategy however does not provide a solid base for a continual growth pattern. Besides on focusing on just volume retailers the company starts acquiring businesses that supply to small independent customer. However as the basic strategy of Newell promotes multi brand offering the aggressive strategy of acquiring related businesses that volume retailers would keep on their shelves year in and year out somehow add value to its business portfolio as long as the company stick to its major strategy of serving mass retail customers rather than small independent retailers. 2. What are the company’s distinctive resources? Newell has a heritage of resource-based culture. Since its inception in 1902, Newell has grown from a small metallic curtain rods supplier to a giant consumer and commercial products with a very diverse and decorated portfolio comprising of renowned brands across globe. From the time of company president Dan Ferguson, who formulated the core corporate strategy and laid out the strategic focus of the company, Newell has done business based on one simple yet defining philosophy â€Å"build on what we do best†. Their core competency laid in high volume, low cost production and ability to establish a strong bond with large scale retailers. Carrying forward this philosophy, Newell’s distinctive resources comprise of its strong HRM, particularly senior management, extremely focused acquisition approach and its robust alignment and restructuring process. Newell is blessed with a dynamic management that has adopted a foresighted and holistic approach. The management has held close the philosophy of building a strong empire around ‘brands that matter’ while sticking to its core competencies to sustain a global competitive advantage. From the time the company realized its vision to produce high volume/ low cost products that were recognized globally, it ensured that all the companies it acquired over the years were streamlined according to the company’s fundamental, core strategy. The management played an instrumental role by cutting down the costs and increasing profit margins of the acquired companies effectively. This process called ‘Newellization’ took place within the short period of 6-18 months because of the commendable efforts of the management. All the companies taken over by Newell were allotted presidents and controllers brought in from outside of acquired firms in order to align the processes and administration with that of Newell’s. Second distinctive resource is Newell’s acquisition strategy- smooth and focused. Newell thrived by acquiring 30 major businesses in just 20 years, bringing under its banner major brands like Calphalon, Black and Decker, Rubbermaid, Kirsch and so forth. The company had a well defined mission; to produce and supply volume merchandise to merchandise retailers, and for this purpose, it only targeted those companies that could help pave Newell’s presence in large and reputed retailers. It intended on acquiring companies that had fundamental similarities with Newell but had low operational efficiency and low profitability so that after acquisition, the performance could be easily juxtaposed via financial statements analysis and critical areas identified. Also, Newell only took over companies that added to its prestige and did not dangle its strategic focus. For instance, Newell divested any business that did not have a strategic fit with Newell’s main focus. When Wm. E. Wright, acquired in 1985 by Newell, lost share with large scale retailers and moved to the individual retailers segment, despite the solid performance of the former, the latter divested and sold the company to better utilize the resources on alternative businesses that connected Newell to mass retail customers. The last distinctive resource identified is the Newellization process itself carried out by the company. As mentioned above, Newell was able to streamline the practices and major functional activities like administration, accounting etc as well as cut costs by identifying flaws in the company’s value chain, quite successfully. Usually the process took about 18 months but for most cases, it was able to undertake this challenging job within 6 months. 3. Does the acquisition of Calphalon make sense? Calphalon was established in 1963, indulged in production of high quality aluminum cookware. It was a privately held company. It entered the food industry in 1973. It was in premium product line; produced six major products. In 1987, its sales went very high; in 15 years it rose from $6million to $120 million. But its profit margin declined. In 1997, Calphalon failed to keep pace with the time, a younger fashion oriented age originated which the company did not follow. Its distribution channel was the main reason. Calphalon had two strengths; (i) pull strategy of sales process and (ii) strong customer relationship. Newell was attracted towards it due to its success in the company and potential to grow further, its declining profit margin was the major reason for the acquisition to take place. History has it, Newell is attracted to companies with lower profit margin; Anchor Hocking can be taken as an example. Its sales equaled to $757 million but had a profit margin of 0. 5%. Newell on the other hand, had a sales of $350 million but a profit margin of 11%. In 1987, Newell did a takeover and applied its Newellization process and was very successful. The acquisition took place in 1998 when Calphalon was already in a contract for manufacture of kitchen essentials. The acquisition of Calphalon does not make sense due to the following reasons: The mission statement of Newell â€Å"Newell is a manufacturer and full-service marketer of consumer products serving the needs of volume purchasers† describes its focus on mass retailers rather than small independent retailers. The acquisition of Calphalon does not make sense as it was operating on micro level by concentrating on final consumers as well as retailers and this was not compatible with the Newell strategy. Newell’s goal was to achieve efficiency by enjoying economies of scale as it was targeting to mass retailers, Calphalon management however never focused at the volume opportunity but at the opportunities the relationship can deliver to the overall objective of the brand. Calphalon was facing strong competition in the market from some solid brands and was facing the pressure of price wars from them which makes its position quite risky. Newell on the contrary was a risk averse company and avoid indulging in price wars. 4. Was the Rubbermaid acquisition a good move for Newell? Acquisition criteria of Newell’s Rubbermaid fits within this company because this has strong brand equity with significant shelf space at mass retailers but its operations were inefficient. The rising costs with service problems have diminished its (Rubbermaid) potential profits. By controlling Rubbermaid costs Newell can improve Rubbermaid deteriorating position. The acquisition costs looks to be overvalued according to financial forecasts post-â€Å"Newellization†, The net present value of future cash flows of Rubbermaid at time of acquisition less than half of the actual acquisition price. This makes any kind of potential value creation irrelevant since Newell would need to overcome the market premium in terms of either future savings or increased growth. The degree to which this acquisition adds value depends on Newell’s ability to absorb Rubbermaid into its existing corporate structure. The sheer size of Rubbermaid (75% of Newell’s revenue in 1997) points to a longer â€Å"Newellization† process than the standard 6 month period. If the â€Å"Newellization† process drags out, Newell will be forced to invest more of its time and resources into integrating Rubbermaid. This may leave less time to focus on new acquisitions. There is also a strong chance that absorbing Rubbermaid is the incorrect approach to integration. Newell will need to work with the majority Rubbermaid’s existing workforce and management team, there are simply too many to replace. In addition, Rubbermaid’s excellence in new product development adds value to Newell. If Newell were to absorb Rubbermaid, it could risk alienating the new work force and destroy the processes that promote new product development.

Leadership Theories Essay Example Paper Leadership Theories Essay Introduction Introduction Numerous studies have been conducted on leadership styles and theories, leading to an abundance of information on the topic. This paper will identify leadership styles and theories that the author has experienced in the maintenance field. Given the leadership styles identified, the author has identified one leadership theory that has influenced their leadership style for an ongoing project that they are currently working on. The study of leadership has identified many different styles exhibited by leaders. Leaders may be of predominantly a single style or may demonstrate the use of different styles depending on the environment that they find themselves in. Goleman (2000) has identified six styles which have been summarised below, however the descriptions of each style may be known by other titles according to different authors. Coercive – ‘Do as I tell you’. Demands that people follow the instructions given to them and leaves no room for their input o r initiative. Rules from the top down. Can make people feel devalued and so resentful that they feel no compulsion to help the leader or business. It can however be used in times of crisis, during a turnaround and to deal with problematic employees, however it should ceased to be used when then issue is dealt with. Authoritative – ‘Come with me’. Authoritative leaders build a vision and inspire people to achieve the vision. Establishes a clear vision and encourages everyone to achieve the vision with true enthusiasm. They motivate people by demonstrating to them how their work fits into the larger vision of the organisation, and generally offers people the freedom to develop their own methods to achieve the stated vision. Leadership Theories Essay Body Paragraphs Affiliative – ‘People come first’. The Affiliative leader has a caring, nurturing approach building strong emotional bonds with people to develop fierce loyalty among people. They provide the freedom for people to choose the most effective way to do their work. Affiliative leaders offer positive feedback to personnel providing a sense of recognition and reward for work well done which in turn generates motivation and a sense of belonging among personnel. Democratic – ‘What do you think? ’. By listening to other people’s ideas and getting their buy-in, the democratic leader seeks consensus among personnel in how the work is to be done to achieve their goals and in setting the goals. This leadership method can create high morale and flexibility within a workforce due to personnel having a say in what is happening. Leaders can use this method to put off decision making or gain input from personnel to make decisions, however there is a risk that if a consensus cannot be reached on issues, many meetings may soon start to occur where decisions are not made, and more meetings are required. It is also a style not recommended when personnel are not competent or well enough informed to be able to make sound decisions. Pacesetting – ‘Do as I do, now’. The pace setting leader sets extremely high performance standards and then exemplifies them himself, expecting the others around him to do the same. If used inappropriately, it will negatively affect the work climate by the pacesetter overwhelming employees with their demands for excellence by making them feel as though they cannot be trusted to do their work. Initiative, flexibility and responsibility among personnel will also diminish. This approach however may work well with a group of like minded, competent personnel who have a set goal or project to complete. Coaching – ‘Try this’. By helping personnel to identify their strengths and weaknesses, the coaching leader helps to determine long term development goals and formulate an action plan to attain those goals. Coaching leaders are prepared to assign challenging tasks to personnel and accept the risk of short term failure if it furthers long term learning. Paradoxically, coaching primarily focuses on personal development rather than the immediate work related tasks, however coaching reinforces many factors that drive work climate – constant dialogue, constant and constructive feedback, clear expectations, responsibility, flexibility and commitment all of which have a positive effect on business performance. Although Goleman (2000, p. 87) identifies 6 individual leadership styles, he also goes on to state: Leaders who have mastered four or more – especially the authoritative, democratic, affiliative, and coaching styles – have the very best climate and performance. And the most effective leaders switch flexibility among the leadership styles as needed. Other leadership styles and theories include: Charismatic – According to Fatt (2000), â€Å"the charismatic leader is a visionary, specifically, having a vision of extraordinary goals and the ability to motivate those around him or her to achieve that vision†. The charismatic leader is able to express the vision, both in terms of communicating the vision and through their personal behaviour to realise the vision, explain the vision to others capturing both benefits to the business and the individual, extend the vision throughout the organisation and expand the vision in different ways and circumstances addressing whatever is required to achieve the vision. Charisma is often conferred by followers onto the leader, creating loyalty to the leader. The climate created by the leader is liable to change when the charismatic leader is removed or the situation changes and the need for a charismatic leader is no longer there. Situational Leadership Theory (SLT) â₠¬â€œ SLT suggests that leaders demonstrate a combination of both task and relationship orientated behaviours in various ratios when dealing with their subordinates depending on the maturity (ability and willingness) of the subordinate to able to complete the task. Blank et al (1990) suggest â€Å"subordinate â€Å"maturity† as the key situational characteristic that is said to moderate the relationship between leader behaviour (task and relationship) and leader effectiveness (Hersey Blanchard, 1969, 1982)†. It can be said then that as a workers maturity grows, their relationship with their leader will also change in terms of the leader demonstrating more relationship based behaviour and less task orientated behaviours. Path Goal Theory (PGT) – â€Å"The theory states that the main goal of the leader is to help subordinates attain the subordinates’ goals effectively, and to provide them with the necessary direction and support to achieve their own goals as well as those of the company. † Silverthorne (2001). In trying to achieve this, the leader needs to be adept in adopting directive, supportive, participative and achievement-orientated behaviours where necessary in order to assist the worker in achieving their goals. The leadership behaviour required will be decided by the nature of the task and the needs of the workers who have been set the task. Transactional – Transactional leadership involves the setting of tasks or goals and the provision of recognition or rewards for achieving the desired results. Bass et al. (2003), further this by stating â€Å"Exhibiting transactional leadership meant that followers agreed with, accepted, or complied with the leader in exchange for praise, rewards and resources or the avoidance of disciplinary action†. This includes a behaviour known as active management by exception whereas the leader specifies the standards for compliance, what will be deemed as non-conformance, and often details consequences of non-conformance. Transformational – â€Å"Transformational leadership refers to a leadership style in which leaders possess charisma and provide intellectual stimulation, individualised consideration and inspirational motivation to followers† Beugre et al. (2006). By clearly defining the organisations goals and objectives to workers, the transformational leader then inspires and motivates workers to achieve, beyond the task – reward behaviours exhibited by transactional leaders, the goals and objectives of the organisation. Transformational leadership is an effective style when an organisation needs to encompass change as transformational leaders identify new ways of working, seek opportunities and effective resolutions to problems rather than efficient solutions. Leadership styles can be many and varied or a leader can sometimes exhibit a dominant style. Generally throughout the research the author has conducted, the more styles a leader is competent in, the more likely they are to achieve the results they are after. The leadership style adopted by a leader in a given situation can have a large affect on the work climate and consequently, aid or inhibit them from achieving their objectives and goals. Things are changing and he does not know if what he has been taught in the past is true. He has extreme doubt in everything that he has ever known. He feels that everything is false and he can not trust authorities. He decides that he needs to look for a new foundation (a reconstruction of knowledge). He believes that this new found knowledge should be certain and never doubted. Descartes starts to argue his points in his meditations. Descartes starts by doubting those qualities that we obtain through are senses. He first doubted those qualities of objects which involved only are senses and then he started to doubt ideas of mathematics. He says that some evil being must be deceiving him in anything that he has ever known. In the second meditation, Descartes starts again from almost where he left off in the first. He goes on to try to argue his existence. He starts by saying that he used to see himself as a rational animal, nut he wonders if he exists or if some kind of being is making him thing he exists. Descartes finally says that he can prove that he exist by thinking. He says I think therefore, I exist. This is his proof for his existence. Then Descartes gives an analogy through wax. First he describes the outward appearance of the wax. He puts the wax by a fire and it starts to melt. He begins to question if this is the same piece of wax that he had moments before. Descartes states that if perceives that the wax exists and in order to do this he must be perceiving so this proves that he exists. He uses this wax argument to establish that the mind is the only means of knowledge. His defense is the minds ability to clearly and distinctively perceive truths. ...

Program theory The results of the study represent a theory based, contextually appropriate methods for HIV/AIDS reduction among the South African adolescents. The meta-analyses indicates that results from the school level were almost similar to the results obtained from individual level, although slightly more significant statistically. While logic models and program theory are frequently used interchangeably, the more accurate definition of a logic model is the graphical theory. The importance of logic models in this t ype of study cannot be ignored. This is because logic models are used as tools to plan, develop, manage, communicate and evaluate program or study. The logic models are effectively used in this study. For example, tables 1, 2, 3 and 4 give description of logic models as used in the study. Table 1 shows the number of students used in the study. 558 girls and 449 boys participated in the study. Linking this to the logic model, then Table represents the input section of the model. Good and Bad Discrimination Essay When the word discrimination is brought up there is an automatic negative response, due to the fact that most have this idea that there is only bad discrimination. This comes from people using stereotypes and being prejudice which creates detrimental situations. However, when a person discriminates it does not mean they are trying to be harmful. Discrimination is when one distinctively favors or is against certain groups, categories, people, and classes and or things that may come from them. Discrimination its self is not bad, but the things that can stem from it, are actually what makes people look at it negatively. People discriminate for many reasons such as religion, race, and even for business and employment. It is one thing to have a preference over something else but to actually deny a person over what race, or religion they are is perverse. Now there are some positives when decisions are made about things depending on an individual’s race or religion. There are people who only want to date or marry to the same race, religion, culture, category, class, and things like that. And that does not always mean that they are being racist, stereotypical, prejudice or anything of that nature but that they simple are particular. There are even laws that require for workplaces to accommodate for their employees religion just along their religious practices will not bring problems to the employer. However, in the eyes of the employer they may feel as though if they indeed hire someone with certain beliefs that conflict may arise even if they are unintentional, and a decision maybe made to avoid that. Which is a decent argument but it still is a form of discrimination. One of the biggest reasons people discriminate is that they are actually afraid of what they may or may not understand. â€Å"The fear of that which is different, that which we do not understand, could have been an adaptive strategy early on in our history† (Why Does Discrimination Occur?. Ehow. com ). Instead of learning how to live with something and become more educated about it they cast it out. Especially if it is something that it out of the norm, or different. Such as homosexuality, a lot of people are homophobic. They have an unreasonable fear of homosexuals and which they may have their reasons as to why. Some people take it past the limits to make people are attracted to the same sex feel different, unaccepted, or unwanted all because they are ignorant of that culture. They have no idea what it is like and instead of trying to comprehend, they use negativity. Now there is nothing wrong with not being gay, and disagreeing with it but an opinion does not have to be expressed in a way that may be harmful. Just because a person is not apart of a certain group does not excuse the act of disrespecting another group or category. A lot of individuals will argue that it is simply wrong, and that it should not be permitted due to religious reasoning. Yes, that does make a lot of since, but I am very sure that many people do things that go against their religion all the time, they just happen to be discrete. Some people are afraid or have been brought up to not over step the boundaries so when others do not abide by the same rules they are automatically looked down upon. Society assigns everyone a certain social identity. Which ever category a person is placed they tend to accept others who are from the same group as they are. Prejudice is derived from our tendency to divide world into ‘us’ and ‘them†( Musa, Prejudice Discrimination and Stereotype). This causes great division between people which is one of the reasons why a lot of people categorize other individuals. Being that prejudice, discrimination, and stereotype are in society there are social aspects and effects. â€Å"Exposure to derogatory ethnic labels can elicit conformity pressures with people wanting to fit-in† ( Musa, Prejudice Discrimination and Stereotype). Generally people fear to be outcast so they go with the crowd. Afraid that if they choose not to agree then they might become socially unexpected. â€Å"People can reduce their reliance on stereotypes by consciously saying no to association between stereotypes and specific social groups† ( Musa, Prejudice Discrimination and Stereotype). It would make a lot of since for people to simply not discriminate sadly that simply will not happen. Either way it may go it is up to the person on what they will choose to do, but social impact has a lot to do with the decisions people make. â€Å"Social influence plays a role in both maintenance and reduction discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes. Evidence suggesting that members of their group hold less prejudiced views are out of line with most people of their group, they may change their views. † ( Musa, Prejudice Discrimination and Stereotype). â€Å"It may be conceived that because someone is guilty of discrimination that she is mean, angry and hateful, which very well may be the case. However, when we understand that within us all lies some form of discrimination, whether passive or aggressive, it should once again lead us to the conclusion that, of course, it is very easy to discriminate. (Why Is It So Easy To Discriminate? , eHow. com). Every person has their preferences, how they choose to go about them is completely their discretion. There are those who are prejudice, stereotypical, and who discriminate negatively acknowledge it and own up to it. â€Å"Each and every one of us stereotype and have a prejudice of something. Every single one of us. I stereotype fat people. I make fun of them, I call them lazy. Is it right? No. Should people suffering from obesity be kept from living their lives because of my prejudice and stereotypes of them? Absolutely not. † (Kriss 2010). Those who do discriminate have a point of view and some respectively explain them. Kriss discriminates against fat people, does she have that right? Yes, she knows that she should not do it, but she still stands by her opinion no matter what anyone else thinks. Everyone discriminates to a center extent because everyone has their own opinions, and make their own decision with different dependents. Yet and still there things that are wrong which happen to be connected to discriminating and even misconceptions. The way a person behaves is by far their own choice. People are raised differently, have different life experiences, and choose to surround themselves with certain crowds that may differ from others. There are exceptions and there are non exceptions, but being close minded will bring nothing but ignorance. There will always be discrimination because everyone will always have a preference. and there is really nothing that can be done about it. Also prejudice and stereotypes that comes with life. Everything has a positive and a negative.

The Internet is a global network of vast information. With a few clicks, an individual can have access to up to 200 million web-sites filled with educational and recreational information. The Internet is not regulated in anyway (Carnegie Library 1). It is accessible throughout the entire world from the North to the South, to the early morning sunrise and dark sunsets. Different ethnicity and backgrounds come together linked upon this network resembling a connection of one body in unity. Sadly, issues arise creating concern for users, focusing particularly on minors. Pornography is one of the inappropriate materials on the Internet for minors. This material is harmful to young impressionable minds. Pornography is tearing and disintegrating the foundations of our society can be described as follows, "what was available to a small number of people willing to drive to the bad side of town can now be viewed at any time in the privacy of one"s home" (Anderson 2). In order to under stand how to aid in the critical decision of whether or not to censor child pornography, an individual has to first clearly understand a few terms. INTRODUCTION Fast food automation system is a program based on C language. Generally, in various fast food malls and stores we see a number of workers working there to give different items to people. The head of that particular mall has to give them salaries accordingly. By using this, fast food automation program the problem of workers is reduced and management of money becomes very easy. C is a programming language developed at Bell laboratories of USA in1972. It was designed and written by a man named Dennis Ritchie. Possibly C seems so popular because it is reliable, simple and easy to use. Moreover in an industry where newer languages tools and technologies emerge and vanish day in and day out, a language that has survived for more than three decades has to be really good . An opinion that is often heard today is –â€Å"C language has been already superseded by languages like C++, C# and JAVA. This project is a program on fast food automation system using C language. A function is a self contained block of statements enclosed between braces that performs a specific task. It groups a number of repeated statements in a program into a single unit and is identified by a name known as a function name. A program can contain one or more functions, but the main() function must be a part of every program. It is the main() function from which the program’s execution begins. Other additional functions must be subordinate to it and to one another. The process of writing a paper

The process of writing a paper is very complicated and if you do not organize yourself right, the perfection of your paper will be under a big question mark. The whole process can be divided into 5 stages. Following them chronologically, will bring you to a halfway to success. The stages are: Pre-writing: Collecting information, doing research, connecting facts, making outline. Making a Draft: Composing the first draft of your future paper. Revising: re-reading, re-writing, over viewing and correcting. Editing: checking for clarity, style, formality, understandability (Is better when done by another person). Turning in. You have to pay equal attention to each stage, and do not jump for one step to another. Try to focus on every aspect of your paper not to miss anything. The strongest quality in your paper is that it should be specific and clear. So make sure that during all your writing stages, you keep your point focused and understandable. Pre-writing is probably the most important part of the writing. Here you define the plot and the outline of your paper. Collect and figure out what information should be there. Making a draft, this is the part where you make a rough text, which will be edited and revised later. On this stage, you will see how your paper will look when it is completed. Revising, You read the whole paper again and note all mistakes and inaccuracy and revise it. Editing, Is the part where it is recommended to give your term paper writing to a friend for him to read it and to point on some mistakes that you were not able to notice, and correct them.
